Expert sheds light on fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease -- which impacts about 20% to 30% of all Americans to some degree -- can lead to a more serious condition known as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, New York gastroenterologist Brent D. Lemberg says. He explains that fatty liver disease occurs when a person begins to store fat in the liver rather than breaking it down. The stored fat leads to inflammation, which can cause scarring and cirrhosis.
