Engineering takes on a wider role in medicine

Engineering in the medical field amounts to more than producing devices, from the simple to highly complex, for specific tasks. Increasingly, devices designed for one purpose are being re-engineered so they can fulfill more than one mission. "Ten years ago devices were of simpler design and less invasive and applications were more limited. Now there's the concept of having a device do more than what it was initially designed for," said May Sayco, industry solution director at software maker Sparta Systems.
