Patient pneumonia type affects readmission rates, study says

The risk of readmission was 7.5 times higher for patients who had health care-associated pneumonia, compared with those hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia, researchers reported in Clinical Infectious Diseases. However, CMS does not differentiate between the two when determining readmission penalties, which researcher Dr. Andrew Shorr said harms physicians and hospitals without dealing with the underlying problems.
