Clinicians discuss effect of health IT on efficiency, patient ties

Recent statements from industry experts reveal different ideas on the effects of electronic medical records and other health IT tools on care delivery and patient-doctor ties. EMRs "often interrupt the sensitive and intuitive parts" of physicians' jobs, affecting personal connectedness with patients, wrote Dr. Val Jones, CEO of Better Health, in an opinion piece published last week. Such technologies should be used to produce "evidence-based, outcomes-driven data at the point of care," said UCLA Wireless Health Institute's Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in a recent interview.
