SBICs: The love child of VC and Uncle Sam

In the alphabet soup of government programs, SBICs have always been fairly obscure. But now that banks and venture capitalists have all but stopped offering later-stage financing to entrepreneurs, the Small Business Investment Co. program is getting a second look. Through SBA licensing, privately held SBICs can supplement their own investment funds with up to $150 million in government money, which they loan mainly to established companies with dependable revenues.
