Streaming providers seek licensing deals, content production balance

In light of the burdensome costs associated with negotiating licensing deals with studios, streaming-video providers are experimenting with more original programming, but companies differ on where the sweet spot between content licensing and content creation lies. While Amazon took steps recently to bolster its video library through a pricey multi-year deal with Viacom, Netflix is moving in the other direction, allowing licensing agreements to lapse and taking a chance on original shows.
