American eyes spin-off of regional unit, names new American Eagle CEO

AMR, the parent company of American Airlines, said Thursday it is weighing a spin-off of American Eagle, the regional operation that accounts for about one-half of its domestic flying. The move comes amid growing pressure from investors uncertain over American's long-term strategy as its major competitors bulk up through mergers. Word of a possible spin-off came as AMR announced that Dan Gorton, executive vice president for marketing, would be named chief executive of the American Eagle unit.
