DARPA starts blood manufacturing project

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency hopes to grow Type O negative blood outside of the body to help limit combat deaths, many of which occur due to blood loss. The program seeks to develop an automated progenitor cell-based culture system to create normal red blood cells. The group also will look for ways to extend the shelf life of blood donations.
