3 markers can signal exacerbation of COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with high levels of C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and leukocytes in their blood were more likely to experience frequent flare-ups than those with normal levels. The risk was particularly high among patients with severe COPD symptoms. The use of a blood test for the markers was assessed in a study of 61,000 people in Denmark, which appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
