Soap has undergone many changes since it came on the market. In 1963, it had a $271 million market in America; as of last year, sales were more than $4 billion according to Carrie Mellage of Kline & Co. In addition to bar soaps, the 2012 figure includes liquid soaps, body washes and bath additives. Additional changes, such as the introduction of pump bottles, have revamped formulas and packaging.
