U.S. making calculated progress on interoperability, Mostashari says

The U.S. remains a ways off from achieving widespread interoperability where "every encounter and every patient has access to all the world's knowledge," but the nation is making steady progress, National HIT Coordinator Dr. Farzad Mostashari said at a conference. The U.S. will not have one federally run exchange as some people expect, he said, but rather an industry-created exchange guided by the federal government, with the two working together to find regulatory and market-based solutions to problems. The ONC's goal, Mostashari said, is: "The information follows the patient wherever it needs to go."
