Insurers develop apps to connect patients, physicians

Health plans are beginning to offer members smartphone applications that have provider directories, account information and even help in buying coverage. Insurers also are developing apps for physicians, and OptumHealth Care Solutions vice president Karl Ulfers says programs should not only help process claims but should enhance communication between physicians and patients beyond physical visits.
