Calif. provider to pilot ED telehealth initiative

A telehealth pilot program will be launched by the University of California, San Diego, Health System to address problems related to overcrowded emergency departments. The initiative will leverage cameras to enable on-call physicians who are not in the hospital to immediately offer medical assistance to patients. "With the ED physicians on site and an added telemedicine physician, patient care may be significantly expedited. If the use of a telemedicine evaluation can be shown to be safe and effective, it may shift how care in the emergency department is delivered," said Dr. David Guss, chair of the department of emergency medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and principal investigator in the pilot program.
