Experts: New San Francisco Bay Bridge is safe, should open on time

The $6.4 billion San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge in California should open as planned on Labor Day "with or without bolt repairs," according to bridge and seismic engineering experts assigned to examine its construction. "There is no reason to keep traffic off the new bridge until after every last bolt has been 100% absolutely checked," said Frieder Seible, chairman of the Toll Bridge Seismic Safety Peer Review Panel. The panel determined that the broken bolts are vital only in the event of an earthquake and that even as is, "the new span is far and above the safest option for the 280,000 vehicles that will cross the bridge daily."
