Harkin's NCLB overhaul approved by Senate committee

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, says he plans to bring his bill, overhauling No Child Left Behind, to the floor sometime this year -- following the legislation's passage Wednesday by a Senate committee. Under the bill, portions of the federal education law would be relaxed, but states still would be required to set performance standards for students. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., earlier offered competing legislation, which failed to win support as an amendment to Harkin's bill.
