ONC head: Practice, payment changes needed to see EHR benefits

Physician practices will gain more productivity from electronic health records if they change their care flow processes to differentiate tasks done by staff from those done by technology, said Farzad Mostashari, M.D., head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Practices operating under a fee-for-service payment system will not see the revenue gains from having EHRs that those in a value-based payment system, such as a patient-centered medical home, will see, he said.
