Study shows occurrence rates, risk factors for thromboembolic events

A study in the journal Spine has determined risk factors and the occurrence and mortality rates associated with thromboembolic events following lumbar spine surgery. The study involved 578,457 patients who underwent lumbar decompression and fusion from 2002 to 2009. Coagulopathy was a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis. Anemia and fluid disorders were among the risk factors both for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
