EU unveils tougher safety rules for nuclear plants

The European Commission proposed several rules for Europe's nuclear plants that are designed to strengthen safety in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan. Nuclear plants would undergo safety reviews every six years under the rules, and operators would be required to set up emergency response centers on site. EU member states still need to approve the rules before they are implemented.
