How UPS is solving its 15 trillion trillion problem

Delivering packages is no simple task: One driver with 25 packages to deliver has 15 trillion trillion possible routes. Multiply that by 55,000 trucks and you've got UPS' problem. The company is supplementing the knowledge of its drivers with a heuristic computing system that will scour out not just the fastest routes, but also consider "[p]romised delivery times, different types of customers and the types of packages being delivered and picked up," Marcus Wohlsen writes.
