Metformin may not curb gestational diabetes risk in women with PCOS

Metformin treatment did not appear to decrease the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus in polycystic ovarian syndrome patients who took the drug during pregnancy, a small study in Diabetes Care indicated. Researchers examined 60 PCOS patients and found 22 developed gestational diabetes despite receiving metformin therapy. Insulin sensitivity was similar at baseline in those who developed gestational diabetes and those who did not, the study found.
