Democrats walking uneasy line on marriage

The fall election season will be a test of whether Democrats can win over conservative Christian evangelical voters while keeping their pledge to LGBT activists and supporters to fight state constitutional marriage amendments in Idaho, Virginia, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Tennessee and South Carolina. While U.S. Senate Democrats helped defeat the federal marriage amendment, they mostly did so without supporting equal marriage rights, a tactic that disappointed some LGBT Democratic activists.
