Energy Department offers $1.3B in grants for carbon-capture projects

Under a new Department of Energy program, as much as $1.3 billion in grants are being made available for large-scale carbon-capture and sequestration-demonstration projects at industrial sources of greenhouse gas, such as chemical plants. Funding for CCS projects has previously focused on coal-fired electricity generators, even though about 19% of U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions comes from industrial sources. The Department of Energy says it is also providing $100 million in funding for demonstrations of beneficial uses of carbon dioxide, such as conversion to chemicals or fuel.
