White roofs may ease global warming, scientists say

White roofs could help slow global warming by reflecting sunlight back into space, according to some scientists. White roofs are less expensive to cool than dark roofs, which absorb more than 80% of solar energy. These benefits have prompted California to require most flat buildings to have white tops, and Washington, D.C., will soon require flat commercial roofs to be covered in reflective material or vegetation.
