It's hard to measure the effectiveness of clinical information technology, but several hospitals have begun to do so and see that it does improve quality of patient care. "Order sets and decision-support tools lead to improved quality," says the vice president of medical technologies at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "But the real issue is that they allow you to measure in real time what you are doing. Without IT, the data is impossible to collate."
