Researchers in large malaria vaccine study face cultural challenges

As researchers prepare to undertake the largest trial ever on an experimental malaria vaccine across sub-Saharan Africa, they realize they will have to contend not only with the difficult conditions but also with suspicions among some of the locals. The undertaking, which is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will involve more than 16,000 babies from 11 different parts of the region.
