Hamberger: Rail is essential to nation's intermodal network

Although trucking will remain a part of the nation's freight mix for the foreseeable future, U.S. railroads are well-positioned to increase their market share, according to Ed Hamberger, president of the Association of American Railroads. Railroads offer environmental and cost benefits that trucks can't match, Hamberger notes. "Rail intermodal combines the best attributes of different transportation modes to yield a more efficient, cost-effective freight movement," he writes.
