Austin Energy moves closer to completing wind-power deals

The Austin, Texas, City Council is expected on June 20 to give Austin Energy permission to finalize 25-year power purchase agreements with two coastal wind farms. The deals, which are worth $1.4 billion combined, would add 570 megawatts of generating capacity to the city-owned utility. The wind-power deals are good for Austin because constructing a natural gas plant would be more costly, said Bernie Bernfeld, who heads the city's Electric Utility Commission.
