Boston hospital launches hand-transplant program for children

Boston Children's Hospital is starting a pediatric hand-transplant program. Candidates for transplants will include patients who were born without hands or who lost them due to infection or injury. "Children will potentially benefit even more from this procedure than adults," said Dr. Amir Taghinia, who will lead the program. Nerves grow back faster in young patients, and children also can have more difficulty with prostheses, he said.
