Afghanistan drawdown involves massive equipment-disposal effort

The U.S. military has destroyed over 170 million pounds of vehicles and other equipment as part of efforts to wrap up combat operations in Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Military planners project that $7 billion of equipment in Afghanistan will not return to the U.S. because it is no longer needed or would be too costly to ship back.
