University of Kansas geographers Jerry Dobson and Peter Herlihy have received a grant to research communities in Central American countries. The geographers are particularly interested in learning about how land ownership affects stability in these areas. The grant is part of a Defense Department initiative intended to foster a greater understanding of the world. "There are too many instances where misunderstanding of other areas has cost us," said Dobson, president of the American Geographical Society.
