Potato industry pushes to be included in WIC benefit

Since 2007, the federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children program has prohibited participants from buying potatoes with vouchers set aside for purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables. This year, potato industry groups are pushing for Congress to pass an amendment to include spuds; WIC administrators oppose the change, saying the standards are science-based and designed to encourage more consumption of leafy green, red and orange fruits and vegetables.
