Scientists discover how silver attacks bacteria

Dissolved silver ions makes bacterial cell walls weaker and disrupts cell metabolism to create toxins, Boston University biomedical engineers have found. Silver has long been understood to have antibiotic properties, but the discovery of the particular mechanism could have implications for making modern antibiotics more effective, said lead researcher James Collins.
