Companies are required to provide input on blowout scenario

The Interior Department will task offshore drillers to supply data on the possibility of a well blowout when requesting for permits. The companies must assess the oil that might leak from an undersea well if containment infrastructure fails. "This is basic information that applicants should be able to provide; it should not delay permitting of appropriate shallow-water drilling," said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
