A healthy, chemical-free lawn can be achieved with the right grass, proper soil preparation, higher mowing heights and limited application of fertilizer, writes Brian Palmer. "The right grass for a golf course isn't the right grass for a home lawn," said Mark Carroll, an associate professor of turf-grass management at the University of Maryland.
