$5.5B bridge-funding bill introduced in House

A bill calling for $5.5 billion for bridge repairs nationwide has been introduced by House Democrats. The Strengthen and Fortify Existing Bridges Act, or SAFE Bridges Act, comes after the collapse of a segment of an Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River in Washington state. "The nightmarish scene we witnessed ... was yet another dramatic wakeup call on the state of American infrastructure," said Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W. Va. "Congress simply cannot keep hitting the snooze button when it comes to needed investment in our nation’s bridges or think that these aging structures can be rehabilitated with rhetoric."
