AAFP recommends screening all adults for alcohol misuse

Adults ages 18 and older should be screened for alcohol misuse, according to updated recommendations from the AAFP to family physicians and other health care professionals. The recommendation, which also includes providing brief behavioral counseling to patients who engage in risky or hazardous drinking, does not extend to children ages 12 to 17 because the efficacy of physician advice and counseling in this area is uncertain.
