Clamp-down on drug compounders eyed by ex-HHS chief

The creation of the Working Group on Pharmaceutical Safety was announced Wednesday by former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson to push for tighter oversight of drug compounders. The group is pushing for a ban on the compounding of medicines that are basically copies of already available drugs, as well as greater restrictions on medicines that fail to pass federal safety standards and drugs produced without the supervision of the FDA. The group is also prioritizing rules that would notify patients when they are receiving compounded medicines that are exempt from FDA oversight.
