FTC chief takes aim at patent trolls with proposed inquiry

U.S. trade regulators are poised to launch a major investigation into companies that profit by acquiring patents for the purpose of suing manufacturers and service providers whose products depend on them. Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez is expected to seek agency permission Thursday for a probe of patent-assertion entities -- known pejoratively as patent trolls -- that would include subpoenas of companies suspected of frivolous litigation.
