Kroger profit rise tied to service, fuel

Overall sales in the first quarter of 2005 increased 6.2% for Kroger Co. stores, with higher same-store increases at units that sell fuel. An analyst from Morningstar Inc. says customers are probably bundling trips and buying gas and that "Kroger is counting that people don't always want to truck out to a [Wal-Mart] supercenter."
