Western outlet malls win over Chinese shoppers

Chinese tourists make up a large and growing number of shoppers at designer outlet malls in the US and Europe, mall operators say. The number of shoppers from China at Value Retail's nine outlet malls in Europe grew 49% in the first three months of 2013 compared to the same period last year, and US developer AWE Talisman says shoppers from China spend about 50% more than visitors from other countries. "Chinese consumers will take a picture with a smartphone in the store, send it back to a friend in Beijing or Shanghai and get a message back and say ‘yes, that’s the item,'" said Value Retail CEO Scott Malkin.
