Apply skin-care products in order, dermatologist advises

Skin-care creams, lotions and balms should be applied in order from lightest to heaviest to maximize efficacy, dermatologist Neal Schultz says. Acne products, if used, should go on bare skin, followed by sunscreen, whose ingredients need to align, "creating a grid that absorbs UV energy," Schultz said. Water- or alcohol-based products are next, followed by gels, light lotions, heavier creams, thick serums and ointment-based products, in that order.
