Continuation of affirmative action allowed in university admissions

The Supreme Court determined in a 7-1 decision that a lower court must apply "strict scrutiny" to evaluate the use of affirmative action at the University of Texas. "Strict scrutiny imposes on the university the ultimate burden of demonstrating, before turning to racial classifications, that available, workable race-neutral alternatives do not suffice," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote.
