Overuse of proton pump inhibitors

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) were overprescribed in 22 Midwestern U.S. skilled nursing facilities. PPIs prescribed and ICD-9 diagnostic codes were compared and 65% had no diagnostic code for the PPI they were taking. Prescribers in nursing homes should carefully consider each case of PPI use and eliminate unnecessary prescriptions. (Free abstract only.)
