High court rules 5-4 against Defense of Marriage Act

The Defense of Marriage Act has been struck down in a 5-4 ruling by the Supreme Court. The act, which prevents legally married same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits, "violates basic due process and equal protection principles applicable to the Federal Government," according to the majority opinion.
