Australian advocates reject idea of marriage referendum

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has called on leaders of the opposition in Parliament to allow its members to vote their conscience on marriage-equality legislation. Rudd also suggested that if the Parliament does not pass the legislation, it could be put to a nationwide referendum, a move opposed by marriage-equality advocates.
