Laser-activated dye could combat superbugs, study says

British researchers found that indocyanine green dye, which is used in medical diagnosis, can target various types of drug-resistant bacteria, such as Staphyloccus aureus, when triggered by a near-infrared laser. The laser-activated dye, which attacks the DNA and membrane of bacteria, could be used to treat skin infections and cut the need for oral or infused antibiotics for more severe problems, the researchers said.
