Uncertainty continues to cloud the future of cardiology amid implementation of the Affordable Care Act, cardiologists say, but SCAI fellow Dr. Thomas Tu of the Louisville Cardiology Medical Group says one thing that's clear is that "a major sea change" is coming. SCAI Vice President Dr. James Blankenship sees a growing need for specialists as the aging Medicare population and patients newly insured under the ACA flood the system. However, he says cardiology departments are already well-equipped to handle some aspects of the shift, as they have embraced a teamwork approach for years. "That's a train that's already on the tracks," he said.
