Whitehead: Railroads have spent 30 years investing in infrastructure

The freight railroad industry has invested $480 billion over the past 30 years to develop the nation's railroad system, said Pat Whitehead, superintendent of Norfolk Southern in Harrisburg, Pa. Whitehead stressed the urgency of the need to boost investments in the railroad industry to accommodate growing demand. The Federal Railroad Administration says railroads will need to handle an additional 400 million tons of freight in the next 25 years as the population increases, which is why rail investments should be increased, said Whitehead.
