Medal for health technology innovations goes to PET/CT inventors

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society recently awarded the 2010 IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare Technology to engineer Ronald Nutt and physicist David William Townsend in recognition of their development of the first PET/CT hybrid scanner in 1991. "Combining PET with CT gave the best of both worlds -- identify and localize a tumor at an early stage," Townsend wrote.
