Australia unveils new meds under pharma benefits scheme

Australia's pharmaceutical benefits scheme will include the abortion drug RU486, skin cancer treatments, a prostate cancer drug, a breast cancer treatment and a new generation oral anticoagulant medicine to prevent strokes, Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said. "The exciting thing about these new treatments is that they will extend the life of patients with melanoma, with prostate cancer, with breast cancer," she said. "If we didn't subsidize these medicines through the PBS they would be out of the reach of most Australians."
